Here is Makayla and Craig's family tree!Magdalena and José Medeiros seemed like the typical 1950s nuclear family, but they were anything but that behind closed doors. Magdelena was a proud homemaker and José was a proud military man who Leon looked up to and aspired to be like. One day everything changed when Leon walked in on his father José having an affair with another man. Leon's views on José completely soured from that day on and their family's reputation was ruined. Magdalena fell ill and passed away a few years later and Leon blamed his father for her death, claiming she died of a broken heart and he destroyed their family. According to Leon, José is deceased. Craig and Makayla never met or knew much about this side of the family.
Leon Medeiros really drummed it into Craig to be a strong manly man like himself. He would take him camping often and throw him into dangerous situations in an attempt to toughen him up, but it only had the opposite effect on Craig, making him afraid of those things. Craig was blind to his father's toxic ways, until his boyfriend Deimos opened his eyes to it, when Leon discriminated against Craig being in a relationship with a man. Leon doesn't have a relationship with Makayla. He neglected her and only wanted her to be the ideal daughter he wanted, Makayla always retaliated against him, which caused them to clash with their fiery tempers. Makayla resents Leon to the point where she refuses to address him as her father and addresses him as Leon.
Maria and Carlos Carvahlo reside in Brazil, along with Celia's two brothers. The Carvahlo family is very different from the Medeiros side of the family. They're outspoken, warm and creatively expressive with music and art. Carlos taught Celia how to play the guitar, and she then taught Craig and Makayla to play. Carlos is the most positive male figure Makayla had in her life and was more of a father to her than Leon was. Note: Celia's brothers aren't estranged and unknown to her, we just never meet them. It's only established and mentioned that she has brothers.
Celia and Leon were highschool sweethearts. They had Craig at a young age and married due to that. Celia divorced Leon when Craig and Makayla were on the cusp of their teen years. She was fed up with his controlling ways and negative influence on their children. Makayla takes after her mother a lot, whereas Craig didn't have much of a relationship with Celia, due to his father's influence on him.
Brad is Makayla's boyfriend. They have a lot in common, but are also very different in a lot of ways too. Makayla is outspoken, assertive and plays in a thrash metal band, whereas Brad is sensitive and gentle with a love of animals and baking. Leon resents Brad for being the very man he was afraid Craig would turn out to be. Sensitive, emotional and physically unfit. He wishes his daughter would date a "real man" instead. Makayla ends up having a family with Brad later in life and they have a daughter named after Brad's late mother, Eleanora.
Deimos is Craig's boyfriend. They're polar opposites with Deimos coming from a rich upbringing and being an introvert, and Craig coming from a poor upbringing and being an extrovert, but they balance each other out well with their differences. Leon also resents Deimos and wishes Craig would go back to dating his ex-girlfriends, Jaclyn or Veronica again, simply because they're beautiful women. But Craig hates Jaclyn and Veronica given their turbulent relationships, and his heart belongs to Deimos.
